Black Limestone Chippings
Grey on a dry afternoon, jet black after a shower. Black Limestone Chippings change with the weather, and in Ireland you'll probably see both colours in the same week. Dry, the stone is a muted grey-black. Wet, it turns a deep, glossy black, which gives a dashed wall or a grave plot real depth.
- Size: 8 to 11 mm chipping
- Colour: grey/black when dry, deep black when wet
- Pack: 25 kg bag, washed before bagging
What are black limestone chippings?
In the trade this is often called black road chipping. It's a natural limestone aggregate, crushed to a tight 8 to 11 mm grade and then washed in a mixer before it goes into the bag. Washing matters. It takes off the fine dust that can dull a dash finish or cloud a grave covering in the first few weeks.
- Natural limestone, not dyed or coated, so the colour is the stone's own
- Consistent grading, which helps a dry dash coat look even
- Clean, washed stone that's ready to use from the bag
Where to use black limestone chippings
Most of our bags go to plasterers and builders for dry dashing, but families and masons also use this chipping on graves.
- Dry dashing on new builds, extensions and re-rendered walls
- Mixing with other dashing aggregates to create your own blend
- Covering a single or double grave plot
- Filling a memorial kerb set for a calm, dark finish that suits a black headstone

Sizes, coverage and how much you need
| Use | What you need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dry dashing | 1 x 25 kg bag covers about 2 m² | Thrown onto a wet base coat |
| Base coat (limestone sand) | 1 x 25 kg bag covers about 1.25 m² | Mixed 4:1 with white cement |
| Average single Irish grave | About 6 x 25 kg bags | Kerb height and depth will change this |
For example, a 20 m² gable would need about 10 bags of chipping. The base coat is usually our White Limestone Sand mixed with white cement. For other areas, the Online Calculator works out bag numbers from your measurements.
FAQs
How many bags of black limestone do I need for a grave?
An average single Irish grave takes about six 25 kg bags. Deep kerbs or an uneven base can push the number up, so measure the inside of the kerb set first. If you're unsure, give us a call and we'll work it out with you.
Does black limestone chipping stay black?
It's grey/black when dry and deep black when wet, and that's the natural stone, not a coating. On a sunny day it will look lighter than it does after rain. This is normal, and you'll see the same change on a dashed wall and on a grave.
What size is black limestone dry dash?
The chipping is graded at 8 to 11 mm and sold in 25 kg bags. It's washed before bagging, so it's clean and ready to throw onto your base coat.
