Fine Sand

The last hour of a patio job is often the most satisfying. The slabs are down and the lines are straight. All that's left is to sweep a pale, dry, free-running sand into the gaps until every joint is full. Midland Stone's Fine Sand is made for that moment. Once the joints are filled, the surface looks crisp and finished, and your eye goes to the stone rather than the gaps between it.

What is kiln-dried fine sand?

Fine Sand is a kiln-dried jointing sand with a grain size of 600 to 1200 microns (roughly 0.6 mm to 1.2 mm). The granules are prepared ultra-fine and then dried in a kiln, so any moisture is removed before the sand is bagged.

Why does that matter? Damp sand clumps. It sits on top of the joint, smears across the face of the slab and never quite settles. Dry sand behaves more like a liquid. It runs down into narrow gaps and packs them from the bottom up.

  • Ultra-fine granules: the sand slips into tight joints between setts, cobbles and brick paving, so you get a neater, fuller finish with less brushing.
  • Kiln-dried before bagging: the sand pours and flows freely, so it spreads evenly and doesn't cake on the paving surface.
  • Fine, clean grade: the same sand works as play sand and for tiling jobs, so one bag covers more than one task around the house.

Where to use fine sand

It's mainly a paving accessory, but it's more useful than that label suggests.

  • Jointing brick paving, setts and cobbles on patios, paths and driveways
  • Filling joints on block-paved areas after compaction
  • Play sand for a garden sandpit
  • Tiling work and general DIY jobs where a fine, dry sand is needed

If you're still at the planning stage, our guide on how to lay paving slabs, patios and driveways takes you through the groundwork before the jointing.

Storage Keep in a dry place until use

Storage is the one thing people forget. Kiln-drying only helps while the sand stays dry, so keep the bags off the ground and out of the rain until you need them. We take the same care to keep the sand dry on our own premises and in transit.

How much you need depends on your joint width, joint depth and slab size, so a simple area calculation won't give you the right figure. Get in touch with our team and we'll work it out with you.

FAQs

Can I use this fine sand as play sand?

Yes. It's fine enough to use as play sand in a garden sandpit as well as for jointing and tiling.

Why does jointing sand need to be kiln dried?

Dry sand flows. It runs into narrow joints and fills them completely, while damp sand clumps and sits on the surface. Kiln-drying removes the moisture before bagging, so store the bags somewhere dry. Once the sand gets wet in storage, you lose the benefit of the drying.

Can I order more than a few 25 kg bags?

Yes. Fine Sand comes in 25 kg bags as standard, and larger quantities are available to order. Call or live chat with the team about bigger jobs. Landscapers and builders can also ask about our Trade Partner programme.
